White male conservative files discrimination suit against Google

A former Google employee has launched a class-action suit against the tech giant because he claims he was unfairly terminated for espousing the political views of a white male conservative.

Another former employee has joined his suit, which aims to represent all of the downtrodden white male conservatives that Google has mistreated over the years.

Is there any possibility this lawsuit is serious? Could such a thing even happen? Is it really likely that this man was terminated simply for being white, male and conservative?

In essence: yes, yes and no. The lawsuit is real and it is likely to be a major headache for the corporate giant. It certainly is attracting a lot of attention, which could be the end goal of its originators.

It's also entirely possible that a white, male conservative can be treated with discrimination. Most people tend to associate women with gender bias and people of color with racial bias and those who hold controversial political opinions, not conservative ones. However, racial, gender and political bias can happen to anyone. It is entirely possible for someone of any color, gender or viewpoint to suffer discrimination.

However, the reality is that the plaintiff violated Google's code of conduct when he took it upon himself to publish a memo to the entire company that claimed women were essentially biologically incapable of being good at engineering and tech. Google's code of conduct expressly forbids actions that advance negative and harmful stereotypes based on gender.

It's notable that Google is also facing a lawsuit from four former female employees who claim that Google discriminates against women by giving them lower-level jobs without much room for advancement.

It's difficult to say how the employment litigation Google is facing will play out. However, to succeed, the plaintiffs in the newest lawsuit will have to prove that their termination was unlawful and not related to a code of conduct -- or that the code of conduct itself is somehow unlawful.
